Y’all, can we talk about The Polygamist?

The South African show dropped on Netflix June 12, setting social media ablaze. Based on the novel by Sue Nyathi, the show follows Jonasi Gomora (S’dumo Mtshali), a successful businessman, and several women in his life whose worlds have become messily intertwined through their relationships with him.  Anyhoo, let’s get into it.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

Jonasi

Jonasi is the founder of J&J Holdings. The second J is for Joyce (Gugu Gumede), his wife, and the reason the company exists. Her family’s money opened doors he couldn’t, and without her network, J&J Holdings would likely have been nothing more than a dream.

Joyce

In their two decades of marriage, Joyce has endured her husband’s revolving door of side-chicks. As a flourishing social media influencer, Mrs. Gomara takes keeping up appearances very seriously, so she looks the other way —until she can’t.

Matipa

On the surface, Matipa  (Kwanele Mthethwa) appears to be a career-driven woman, determined to climb the corporate ladder. She is dating Jonsai’s brother and right-hand man, Magesh (Kenneth Nkosi), who helps her land a role at J&J holdings. But Matipa’s real ambition becomes obvious fast: she wants to bag the boss.  It doesn’t take long before she’s in Jonasi’s office getting backshots, while her now‑ex, Magesh, is left swallowing his humiliation, painfully aware of where he stands in the power dynamic with his brother.

Renewed Vows

Matipa has Jonasi’s nose wide open, so he asks Joyce for a divorce. Not only does she scoff at the idea, but she also tells her husband, who has now moved in with Matipa, that he had better show up for their 20-year vow renewal party, which is sponsored by the biggest brand partnership in her influencer career.

Jonsai plays along with the charade, but he plans to present his wife with the divorce papers after the party. To add insult to injury, he invites Matipa to the event, who came to stand by her man’s side as he demands that Joyce sign the divorce papers. However, things take a drastic turn when Jonasi sees Joyce walking down the aisle, and nostalgia hits the philandering husband like a truck. In that moment, he decides he wants that old thing back. The vows that were supposed to be performative become real again. Jonasi goes back to his wife, and Matipa is left with egg on her face.

Wedded Bliss…. Until.

The newly reunited couple spends several months in the throws of romantic dinners, vacations, and lots of steamy love-making sessions. But their adult children ain’t feeling the reconciliation.  The couple’s daughter, Mpume (Noluthando Shabalala), and son Menzi (Wonder Ndlovu), both know their daddy ain’t shit. They grew up watching him consistently play in their mother’s face, and they know it’s just a matter of time before he breaks her heart again. They were right.

On a visit to the hospital, Joyce learns that her husband, who is supposed to be in America on a business trip, is visiting the same hospital —because Matipa just gave birth to twin girls.

If  You Can’t Beat Her, Join Her

When internet detectives find out about Jonasi’s new babies, Joyce makes a controversial decision— she tells Jonas to marry Matipa.  By publicly accepting the side chick as a sister wife, and therefore becoming a polygamist, she can quickly quell the media shitstorm that threatens to ruin her brand and reputation.

Neither woman is thrilled about this arrangement, but they both understand that Jonasi has no intention of leaving either of them. So the women reluctantly settle into this three-way, polygamist marriage.  But not without a whole lot of shade, side eyes, and knock-down, drag-out fights.

Lindani

Lindani (Luyanda Zwane) practically grew up in the Gomora household. She’s Mpume’s best friend, so woven into the family’s life that Joyce referred to her as a daughter. But while Joyce saw her as family, Menzi saw something very different. He’d been quietly fantasizing about making Lindani his girl long before he ever worked up the courage to say anything. And when he finally did, she shut it down immediately, reminding him that dating her best friend’s brother would be beyond weird. Besides, Lindani is laser-focused on her secret older boyfriend, who is taking her on a lover’s getaway for the weekend. The mystery lover is Jonasi, and he and Lindai ain’t shit for this. So dating your bestie’s brother is weird… but creeping with her married dad is somehow fine. Got it.

Essie

Essie is Mageshi’s wife, and she and her two children also spent a lot of time at her in-laws’ home. Essie’s daughter, Sarah (Lwazi Keith Tshebeshawere), and Mepume were only a few months apart, and they grew up like sisters—because they are. Because Essie is actually married to Jonasi, too! She and Mageshi pretended to be married to keep Joyce in the dark  and her family’s money flowing. This also allowed  Sarah to spend time with her real father. So both Essie and Magesh sacrificed their lives for Jonasi’s polygamist lies. What in the entire hell?

Revenge

Jonasi’s three wives and girlfriend eventually grow tired of his bullshit, which now included physical abuse. His children don’t want anything to do with him, and  Mageshi finally frees himself from his brother’s chokehold. However, when  Joyce learns her husband has fallen gravely ill, she allows him to move back in, where he cares for him until his death.

On his final night on Earth, she drops the bomb on him: she hired a woman to sleep with him, knowing he’d never turn down new kewchie. That woman had HIV, which she passed to Jonasi, leading to his illness and death. Well damn.

In the words of Jay -Z :

“You don’t get a nigga back like that.”

Aside from a cleverly written plot which blends the perfect mix of drama, comedy, and pure WTF,  The Polygamist is an aesthetic dream. The vibrant Afrocentric costumes and set designs gave main character energy. The cast is filled with real people with real bodies. Thick slim, plus‑size, dad bods, hips, curves, and plenty of booty. We saw ourselves reflected on screen, and it helps expand the narrative of who gets to be centered, who gets to be desired, and who gets to be seen as fully human. Representation matters.  The Polygamist is now streaming on Netflix, in both English and Zulu.
