Real Housewives of Atlanta stars Porsha Williams and Shamea Morton have ended their long-standing friendship. Morton confirmed the bestie breakup when she appeared on Watch What Happens Live, where she became emotional while discussing the demise of their friendship, which spanned more than twenty years, with host Andy Cohen.

Some fans blamed “reality TV” for the ladies’ friendship breakup, but the television cameras likely highlighted a friendship foundation that had probably been cracked for a long time.
In season 16, episode 10, the growing tension between the women came to the surface when, through coaxing from castmate Angela Oakley, Shamea admitted that she had been harboring hurt feelings because Porsha didn’t show up for her wedding in Kenya. Williams provided several conflicting excuses for her absence. When confronted, Porsha was seemingly unapologetic and broke into tears, claiming that she was unaware Shamea was “mad” at her. This Karenish move turned Porsha into the victim instead of Shamea, who just poured her heart out, even though Shamea should have confronted this issue several years ago. Shamea also claimed that Porsha did not want her bestie to become a full-time cast member on the show.

In this season’s opening episode, Porsha arrived at Shamea’s 40th birthday party more than three hours late. The RHOA alum pulled up just as the birthday girl’s husband, Gordon, gifted his her with a Rolls-Royce. Porsha made her grand entrance, seemingly unaware she had just trampled on her friend’s special moment.
Shamea played her new single for the ladies in another episode. Porsha talked incessantly while the song played, causing other castmates to give her the side-eye. The Go Naked Hair owner also claimed not to believe it was her friend’s voice on the track. In both of these incidents, Shamea didn’t stand up for herself; instead, she said she decided to give Porsha “grace” because of her impending divorce. As a recovered people pleaser, I, too, offered “grace” instead of addressing issues head-on. Through therapy, I realized that my “compassion” was rooted in fear of confrontation, social conditioning, and unhealed childhood trauma. I suspect that Shamea, an admitted people pleaser, is the” bigger person” for similar reasons.
As some social media users have pointed out, Porsha appears to have difficulty sharing the spotlight with Shamea, who seems to be living the life Porsha has aspired to create for herself. Watching a friend thrive can be emotionally challenging, and feelings of jealousy are a natural human response. However, rather than confronting those emotions head-on, Porsha seems to express them through passive-aggressive behavior aimed at undermining her friend. This behavior can be considered a form of emotional abuse.

Friendships will naturally evolve as childhood buddies grow up, start families, gain new experiences, and adopt new ideologies. Some friendships will age like fine wine, while others rot like a ripe banana left in the sun. Letting go can be difficult, especially when you share mutual friends, intertwined families, and childhood memories. But sometimes, letting go is both necessary and the best for one’s mental health.
Like Andy Cohen, we hate to see a friendship come to an end, but moving forward requires honesty, both with themselves and with each other. Maybe the two will find a way to repair their bond, or perhaps not— and that’s okay.
