A prominent Detroit judge’s estranged wife has called it quits on her almost four-decade marriage.
Linda Yvette Mathis filed for divorce from her popular TV court judge husband, Greg Mathis, citing “irreconcilable differences” after nearly four decades of marriage. Linda reportedly filed the paperwork on Aug. 22 at Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The estranged couple’s love journey began while she and Greg were in college. The sweethearts wed in 1985. According to the filing, they have been separated since July 17. Linda petitioned the Superior Court and has requested that the court waive her husband’s right to seek support from her. She also asked Greg to cover her legal fees. It remains unclear whether the couple had a prenuptial agreement.
The 64-year-old magistrate, best known for his long-running courtroom show Judge Mathis, which aired 24 seasons from 1999 to 2023, is a prominent figure in television history. Greg’s tough-love approach to his cases earned him the longest-running Black male television host and the second-longest-serving arbitrator in courtroom TV, behind only Judge Judy. In 2022, Mathis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Following Warner Bros.’s cancellation of his show last year, Mathis quickly announced a new courtroom series, Mathis Court With Judge Mathis, produced by Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group. In 2022, he starred alongside his wife and their four children in the docuseries Mathis Family Matters, which highlighted their life in Los Angeles.
The judge posted a photo of him and Linda looking cozy and booed up as they returned to Detroit in June.
“GUESS WHO’S BACK?! Detroit celebrated the reopening of Michigan Central, a landmark event, with an all-star concert of Detroiters. Linda and I had a great time watching our city shine,” he captained the post.

Fans and supporters encouraged the judge to not go through with the divorce.
“We are about to be all in these comments about you and Linda. We don’t play about y’all. Whatever it is, work it out. Go apologize. Win your wife’s heart back, please. Your extended family loves y’all. I feel like my uncle and aunt are splitting up. I hope both of you read the comments together. Don’t let the world rob you of your marriage, please. 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️”
“Please stay together 😢😢😢.”
The Mathis family has been a prominent fixture in the entertainment world, but now they face a new chapter as Greg and Linda part ways after nearly 40 years together.
