Apparently, Kelendria Trene Rowland ain’t with the shits—and by shits we mean the shenanigans the entertainment industry pulls as it pertains to devaluing Black women. Sources told Page Six, that Kelly Rowland was slated to host the Today show with Hoda Kotb but jetted the fuck up outta there due to subpar dressing room conditions. The Today show was one of Rowland’s stops on a press run promoting her current Netflix movie Mea Culpa produced by Tyler Perry. Rowland appeared on the 8AM segment to discuss the film with morning host Savannah Guthrie, and was due to return at 10AM to sit in as guest for Jenna Bush Hager alongside Hoda. Allegedly, the appearance came to a screeching halt, as Rowland was a “No, No, No, No, No” show and dipped out on the hosting gig.
Sources told NY Post. Rowland and her team weren’t feeling the “notoriously small” dressing room accommodations, one source It was also reported that Jennifer Lopez, who was also appearing on the Today show, occupied a larger green room on an upper level in the building, while other dressing rooms in the building are known to be “glorified closets.”
Imagine the glorious “Motivation” singer hold up in a glorified closet while “Jenny From The Block” is in the same space kicking back comfortably. The media might have a field day with that one.
Well-played, Ms. Rowland. Well played.
It’s giving Kelly Rowland, a solo singing sensation and one-third of the darling trio Destiny’s Child, knows her muthafuck’n value even if the NBC network does not. And while the songbird may have exited giving little notice to the show, her actions speak volumes about self worth and possibly how the worth placed on Black women by the entertainment industry. Taraji P. Henson lit up headlines when shared that she and her cast mates, which included Danielle Young and Fantasia Barrino, had a dismal experience on the set of The Color Purple. Henson disclosed that there was no food, no trailers and that producers expected them to drive to set daily while filming in Atlanta. Gabrielle Union piggybacked Taraji’s sentiment with a social media post that outlined several slights Black actresses encounter. Comedienne Mo’Nique recently appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast Club Shay Shay, airing out her grievance on the number of ways she’s been devalued after earning an Academy Award for the critically acclaimed film Precious.
Rowland has not yet commented on Today’s tea but perhaps a trend is underway with Black women walking away from shit that does not serve them.
