Irv Gotti, the influential hip-hop producer and founder of Murder Inc. Records, has died at the age of 54, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, Gotti experienced a minor stroke last year, raising concerns about his health.

Born Irving Lorenzo, Gotti was a central figure in the evolution of hip-hop and R&B in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His label, Murder Inc. Records, launched the careers of stars like Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Lloyd, dominating the charts and redefining the era’s sound.

News of his passing has shaken the music industry. Fans, artists, and colleagues have poured in with tributes, praising his visionary leadership and lasting impact on the culture.

A Game-Changing Career

Gotti’s career began in Queens, New York, where he produced for some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including Jay-Z, DMX, and Fat Joe. His production work showcased his knack for blending hip-hop and R&B, laying the groundwork for his future success.

In 1998, Gotti co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother, Chris Gotti. The label became a powerhouse, producing multi-platinum albums and chart-topping hits. Songs like Ja Rule’s Always on Time and Ashanti’s Foolish became defining tracks of the era, solidifying Murder Inc.’s place in music history.

Beyond the music, Gotti expanded his influence on television. He produced Tales, an anthology series inspired by classic hip-hop tracks, and the Murder Inc. docuseries for BET, which explored the label’s rise and legacy.

Health Struggles

Gotti’s death follows years of health challenges. In 2024, he suffered a minor stroke, which his team attributed to complications from diabetes.

“Irv has been struggling with diabetes for years, which caused him to have a minor stroke over six months ago,” his representative said in a statement last spring. “He has since changed his diet and made a full recovery.”

Despite these reassurances, concerns about his health persisted, particularly after his candid discussion on Drink Champs in 2023, where he admitted the difficulty of managing his condition while maintaining a demanding career.
