Sean “Diddy” Combs was seen perusing Miami Beach with his longtime homie Stevie J recently and somehow it seems he’s been missed. As the disgraced mogul graced the south shore with his public presence wearing “Good Luck Only” apparel, a few fans flocked around him for photo opportunities.

According to footage shared on The Shade Room’s Instagram profile, folks were eager to take selfies and dap up the abusive bad boy who has been lowkey after lying and denying assault accusations brought against him by his former on-again, off-again girlfriend Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura. Diddy himself was in full Diddy mode, shaking hands and smiling for the camera. Nothing new to see there.

This is the Diddy persona the public is most akin to—which is a stark contrast to the Diddy who once called himself “Love,” but was caught on hotel security camera, repeatedly pummeling fists and kicking his heels into Cassie’s body as she laid on the ground cowering trying to shield herself from his violent tirade.

“I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” he added. “I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.” Combs said after footage of the incident was leaked.

Diddy’s Jekyll & Hyde persona is all kinds of disturbing; as is the fandemonium around him. Beach goers gathering delightfully around the fist thrower to get a selfie is cringe and very much reminiscent of fans’ adoration for other celebrities who have been known for their abusive nature. Singer R. Kelly is the first who comes to mind. Despite Kelly being a serial sex offender and convicted statutory rapist, fans continue to defend his dis-honor and behavior with their whole chest.

On Instagram, a fan page dedicated to Kelly is full of worship and praise for the deplorable singer, and primarily from women. On a May 19 post that shares footage of an R. Kelly performance, one follower commented: “my man my man my man,” claiming the sexual deviant as her man, her man, her man.

This phenomenon is hella odd and it’s giving the lowest of lowly vibrational.

Fans who prioritize celebrity over accountability co-signs that celebrity abuse. That co-sign facilitates the continuation of that celebrity’s abusive behavior. These actions give celebrity villains license to victimize and celebrity predators the license to prey. By default, these fans are complicit and in some ways aiding and abetting these celebrities when they commit abusive acts. Think about the many people who turned a blind eye to R. Kelly’s inappropriate relationship and illegal marriage to the now-deceased starlet Aliyah when she was just 15-years-old. Had Kelly’s enablers and fans condemned his actions back then, instead dismissing them as freaky mischief or blaming young women for being starstruck groupies, perhaps the tales of a 13-year-old girl being pissed on wouldn’t be reality. Perhaps a legion of women wouldn’t be Surviving R. Kelly.

Could the Beachy Diddy a different Diddy from the Diddy who whipped on Cassie? Is he a different Diddy from the Diddy who admittedly spoke about the “dark place” he was in when he half-assed apologized for putting the beats on Cassie—only after the violent video surfaced back in May?

One cannot be sure.

We are certain of is that Diddy is a well-documented liar and woman beater, and that the public’s affinity for Diddy and other abusers is undefeated—as fuck.

Make it stop.
