This is not a sponsored review and AUNTIE has no affiliation with Peloton

You’ve probably heard of the Peloton app and the pricey bike that it’s associated with. The high-end exercise bike took fitness folk by storm during the COVID-19 quarantine time. People paid upward of $2000 for the stationary bicycle and it’s workout programs as a means to stay fit and pass time.

But did you know the app offers so much more than spin classes? The app features 10,000 live and pre-recorded classes that include strength training, HIIT, yoga, walking, running and of course cycling.

AUNTIE decided to try out the app to see what it was hittin’ on. Here’s the tea:

The Membership

The membership comes in three tiers: The App One membership is $12.99 which includes access to the live and pre-recorded classes and three equipment-based classes (cardio, cycle, rowing) per month.

The App+ membership is $24 which includes access to live and pre-recorded classes and unlimited equipment-based classes.

The $44 is ideal for Peloton bike owners or for those who use Pelotons in the gym regularly because it allows you to connect to classes from your bike.

If you don’t own a Peloton bike, go with the least expensive option which may best suit your needs.

The Workouts

The search bar allows you to filter workouts by type, body part, or fitness level. If you type in several phrases such as “beginner, low-impact and no equipment” and each yields at least 50 workouts. However, it’s important to note that some results were inaccurate. For example, the “no equipment” search resulted in some workouts that did require weights.

If you’re trying to prioritize exercise, an erratic schedule can sometimes make it challenging to squeeze in a workout. This is where the app comes in handy. Try the 20-Minute Arms & Shoulders Strength class. This circuit training workout is accompanied with an early 2000’s Hip-Hop soundtrack which can bring on enough nostalgic joy to almost make you forget that your shoulders are on fire. The 10-minute leg and glute workout with Robin Arzón can beat your ass—literally.

You can supplement gym sessions with the short stretching and core classes, such as 10-Minute Lower Body Stretch and the 5-Minute Core Strength. You can calm insomnia down with a Sleep Meditation class.

The app also features targeted workout plans that you can use in the gym.

The Instructors

A favorite feature of the Peloton app is the instructors. These are not your cookie-cutter fitness gurus. They show up unapologetically as their authentic selves which makes them relatable and enjoyable.

When it comes to diversity and inclusion, the Peloton app hits the mark with teachers from various ethnic backgrounds and body types including pregnant instructors and those with disabilities.

You can see yourself represented in the Black women instructors such as Ash Pryor, the plus sized baddie who teaches row classes, or yoga enthusiast Dr. Chelsea Jackson- Roberts and Tunde Oyeneyin, the Nigerian- American beauty with the big personality which has made her a fan-favorite in the world of Peloton.

Some instructors are loud and bubbly, others are more laid back and some of them cuss a little bit. A little profanity to start your day can invigorate, but if that isn’t your thing you can filter your preferences to get a more sanitized experience.

Regardless of your background, preferences or fitness level, there’s probably an instructor (or five) that fits your vibe.

Pros:

  • Low impact programs, which is beneficial for people who have injuries and other limitations.
  • Beginner Friendly.
  • Diverse workouts and instructors.
  • The ability to track your progress.
  • You can choose exercises based on various preferences including music, instructors and time constraints.
  • Excellent tool for people who travel often.
  • Budget Friendly ($12.99)

Cons

  • Exercising independently run the risk of practicing incorrect form, making you more susceptible to injuries.
  • Not ideal for people who need help with accountability and self-motivation.
  • The search/ filter function could use some improvement.

The verdict

The Peloton app is a beneficial supplement to an exercise regimen. If you’re someone who travels often, you can access workouts at any time. The app helps plan and curate workouts to fit unpredictable schedules and chaotic lifestyles.

Extra cycling classes are worth an additional $12 a month, increasing the subscription $24.99 which may not be worth your coins?

You probably need another subscription like you need a hole in your head, but at $12.99 a month, it’s a worthwhile investment into a health and fitness journey.
