With a career spanning nearly 70 years, Gladys Knight has made an unforgettable impact on the music industry. The 82-year-old icon continues to tour regularly, wowing audiences with her distinct contralto voice, which remains as powerful as the recordings that made her a legend decades ago. However, some of her recent performances have raised concerns about her health among family, friends, and fans.

Videos circulating on social media show Knight appearing confused, occasionally forgetting lyrics or turning away from the audience. At times, her background vocalists can be seen taking over the lead vocals to fill awkward silences. These moments have prompted discussion among fans about the singer’s well-being and whether it may be time for her to step away from the stage.

Is Gladys Knight still performing?

While some fans think that it may be time for retirement, others have pushed back, calling it ageist to say that occasional moments of confusion disqualify a performer from doing what she loves.

But the question is, does Knight still love the stage, or is she clocking in out of obligation? According to Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, it’s the latter.

In Aug 2025, Hankerson told The Shade Room that his mother is showing signs of cognitive dysfunction and claimed that Knight’s husband/manager, William McDowell, is forcing her to work despite her alleged condition. Hankerson filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services accusing the singer’s husband of elder abuse.

Has Gladys Knight been diagnosed with dementia?

The songstress issued a statement denying the accusations, noting that she is “happy and healthy.”

“I’m sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,” Knight said in a statement to ABC News. “I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, the statement said.

She continued to perform on the Queens Tour, co-headlining alongside fellow powerhouses Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan, and Patti LaBelle. While some performances remained impeccable, noticeable lapses in her cognitive abilities did not go unnoticed, prompting fans to further speculate about her condition.

The “Love Overboard” singer’s team later said they would continue monitoring her health and adjust her schedule accordingly. But despite the concerns, Auntie continues to perform, with her most recent performance taking place on Oct. 10 at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City.

Mills discussed Knight’s health in a recent interview with Jason Lee, and she did not hold back. Mills alleged that Knight may be in the stages of dementia and said that it is the responsibility of Knight’s husbandger to prioritize her well-being.  The “Home” singer also said that she believes that Knight no longer wants to continue performing.

We may never know whether the legendary songstress still wants to be on stage.  As long as she can make decisions for herself, the Empress of Soul should live life on her own terms and do exactly what brings her joy.  With timeless classics like “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “Neither One of Us,” Gladys Knight continues to evoke nostalgia for generations of fans while introducing younger audiences to the rich legacy of soul music. That legacy will continue whether she’s standing on a stage or enjoying a well-deserved retirement.

AUNTIE does not require one more public appearance to solidify her legendary status. She doesn’t owe us shit.

We hope she is surrounded by people who genuinely care for her and that her well-being is the top priority. May the rest of her years be overflowing with peace and comfort.  Gladys Maria Knight was, is and will forever be THAT GIRL.
