We’ve heard the cautionary tales of the girls’ trip that starts with an excited group of women boarding a flight in matching girls’ trip-themed tees. Days later, the same group is on the return flight, having changed their seats to avoid one another. The trip ends with cold goodbyes, and friendships on life support.

The girly vacay doesn’t always have to be this messy. An uncomfortable conversation before you purchase that plane ticket could save everyone from trouble in paradise. Because the truth is, a girls’ trip can be a beautiful getaway—or a stress test for friendships that work perfectly fine in everyday life.

Here are five ways to help you avoid wasting your PTO on disaster.

Don’t Be Afraid To Discuss Money

Now that the plane tickets and hotels are secured, travel buddies need to set clear expectations about the budget. Daily spending can look vastly different depending on the vibes. Nothing sours a vacation faster than realizing one of you expects to take advantage of the resort buffet as part of the all-inclusive package, and the other is ready to spend a bag on local fine dining and shopping sprees. The mismatch can lead to tension and guilt. A candid budget talk before the trip saves everyone from feeling pressured or blindsided.

And don’t stop at the daily spending budget. Talk about who is paying for what before you leave. Are you splitting the Airbnb evenly? Who’s putting the rental car on their credit card? Are excursions optional or is everyone expected to participate? What happens if someone cancels after the deposits have been paid?

The “Who all gon’ be there?” Conversation Is Necessary

Let’s be real, the friends of our friends are not always our cup of tea.

Tolerating your friend’s homegirl at brunch and being trapped with them in an Airbnb for a week are two different things. Spending several days in proximity with folks who irk your spirit is not it. If you know large groups overstimulate you, it may be best to sit this girls’ trip out. Bowing out isn’t mean-girl behavior; sometimes it’s self-care. That doesn’t necessarily mean the friendship is bad. It may simply mean you have different ideas about how you want to spend your vacation.

We gather friends in different chapters of our lives, so the childhood bestie may not align with the friend we met at 35, 45, or even 55. These are things to consider when planning a girls’ trip. Sometimes, we want to enjoy time with some of our best girlfriends, but if the vibe is off, it can be a recipe for disaster.

Know Your Travel Style

Even the closest of friends can live entirely different lives at home, so why assume that people want the same type of vacation? For some, an ideal getaway includes lying on the beach with a book for hours. For others, it’s excursions, shopping, sightseeing, clubbing until 4 a.m., and waking up at 7 to do it again. Some travelers sit somewhere in between; all are valid.

Dragging your sleep-deprived friend out of bed for 8 a.m. bungee jumping followed by ATV rides, or some other type of adrenaline rush they never asked for, can be unfair, especially when it’s followed by little quips about being “boring” when they decline. Those jabs add up and can sour the trip for everyone. Either find a travel buddy who matches your aura or learn to compromise. Maybe separate for the day and meet up for dinner later.

Friends don’t have to do everything together simply because they traveled together.

Stand On Business With Your Boundaries

For some, the girls’ trip is a time when you and your sisters can decompress, be free, have real talk, and enjoy a well‑needed break from romantic interests. So imagine waking up early, wandering downstairs braless and in boy shorts, only to find your homegirl having breakfast with the guy she met at the club last night. Not only is it awkward, but it raises safety concerns and crosses boundaries. If your group has a strict “no boys allowed” policy, make it plain.

And if your idea of a girls’ trip includes flirtation and maybe linking up with that fine nigga from Chicago, and you expect your friends not to judge, y’all should discuss it ahead of time. Or better yet, travel with the girlies who don’t mind you doing your thing. Just make sure you share your location, because people be crazy.

Be Flexible, Sis

Shit happens. Flights get delayed, weather switches up, somebody gets sick. This can be frustrating for the friend who spent months planning the perfect trip when one of the girlies gets too drunk at lunch to make it to the all‑white dinner. Or when your “I’m down for whatever” travel buddy suddenly realizes they’ve tapped out and they are sitting club night out. This is life; some things are out of our control.

If you’re the detail‑oriented traveler, you may have to break out Plan B or Plan C, or roll with the punches until the chaos settles. Melting down over minor hiccups doesn’t just ruin your vacay, but it shifts the vibe and makes everyone uncomfortable. Keep your cool and adjust, girl. Happy traveling, AUNTIES.
