Remy Ma and Papoose have a storied history. The one that the public once adored over the past 16 years and the one that has been played out on social media. The public consumption of the couple has gone from sugar to shit and I hate that for them.
The Hip-Hop husband and wife recently aired each other out— along with some alleged dirty laundry— on the Instagrams with very little fucks to give. The latest social media squabble was a messy, mud-slinging melee—complete with finger pointing, text messaging and receipt pulling. Apparently, a divorce is underway, as are allegations of child negligence, cheating, domestic violence, fronting, leeching and lying.

Once upon a time, in the minds of the unknowing, Remy and Pap represented Black love, and not the traditional version. They modeled the kind of love you rarely see publicly, particularly in the Black spaces from which they hail: Castle Hill Projects in the South Bronx and Bed Stuy in Brooklyn, both known for its richness rooted in rap culture, for its downtrodden districts and poverty stricken community and both infamously known as the hood. And their Black love was good and hood in ways that appealed to this specific demographic.
While many Americans read An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, a novel that places Black love and mass incarceration at the intersection of a middle-class experience where it’s main character Celestial, stands by her man after he is wrongfully convicted for a crime—as long as she can—before moving on. An American Marriage is a typical tale, with an all too familiar theme, at least in urban cities.
Conversely, Rem and Pap’s Black love story centered that of a Black girl, who gets knocked for attempted murder; is convicted for intentional assault and sentenced to 8 years up north in a women’s correctional facility. Their tale was one that told a prison love story from a whole other perspective, where the Black girl does the bid and the Black boy holds her down with commissary, collect calls, packages, letters and conjugal visits.

Their story bears grim consequences but also shared a happy ending that resulted in partnership, publicity, reality TV, and a baby girl, Reminisce. Representation of Black love that is rooted in hip-hop and hood shit is either voided from mainstream media or amplified for salaciousness, stereotypes and ratchetry. Papoose and Remy Ma represented the anti-thesis and showed Black love could weather storms. That they could endure despite what an outsiders gaze interpreted. Ironically, though, their story is also telling a bitter truth: that love can come to a screeching halt no matter the circumstances, race or iteration.
Breakups don’t have to be murky but social media has helped facilitate the shit show that has become of theirs.
Anonymity had run its course, as we learned about Remy and Pap’s alleged side pieces. Both of whom have added fuel to a marital fire they had been keeping under wrap for some several years, allegedly since 2022, according to VIBE.
Curiosity around the status of the couple’s union grew back in October 2024, when it was implied that Remy was having an affair with Easy da Block Captain.
It does not help that Papoose’s current partner, the highly notable world champion boxer, Claressa Shields is an extension of the entanglement. Shield’s celebrity alone keeps the breakup fresh and front and center in our collective minds and highly visible in mainstream media. AUNTIE mourns a time when we knew nothing about people’s breakups.
The criticism, judgement and speculation that flew against, around and among Remy and Papoose is the result of public access and consumption that has dragged their situation to hell. The lesson remains: Privacy is king and the court of public opinion ain’t shit … and granted, shit happens. But we need to allow people to breakup in peace and with dignity.
If love can be beautiful, the love loss doesn’t have to be so ugly.
