Award-winning actress Angela Bassett received an honorary Oscar from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Jan. 09, at the 14th Governors Awards. The 65-year-old actress acknowledged her family and friends after she accepted the honor from Regina King and paid homage to the Black woman whose shoulders she stands on—including Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Rosalind Cash—who Bassett said “were my North Star, my guiding light, proof that while the road may not be without curves and bumps, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny,” People reported.

The regal Bassett called her two children to their feet and spoke to them directly as the proud moment was captured by Courtney Vance, the actress’ husband.
