Each year many people buy into the idea that a new year should motivate a new you. New beginnings can be a good time to get on your mark, get set and go in several areas of your life, including finances, fitness, weight goals and others. Detoxing is a major goal that resurfaces annually. Alcohol, diet, gut and skin are all on the detox list, but what about detoxing the box? By box, we mean coochie, kitten, pussy, or whatever you are calling your vagina these days. According to the National Library of Medicine, the science around whether douching is beneficial or harmful has been conflicting over the last 100 years. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, one in five women between the ages of 15-44 douche on the regular. Despite douching data that resulted in the general consensus that douching was a no-go, potentially placing women at risk for “pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and perhaps other conditions,” many are still doing so—particularly Black women.

To be clear—douching is dead AF, or at least it should be. It is beyond time to toss those wretched water bottles and put Massengill and Summer’s Eve to rest. The squeeze ain’t even worth the coochie drama. —And contrary to popular belief, alternative practices like Yoni steaming and using Yoni pearls as a means to detox the box is discouraged by gynecologists. Yoni steaming, which involves squatting over a hot pot of brewing herbs, can actually burn your poom-poom lips. Yoni pearls, on the other hand, are made up of “multiple herbs wrapped in small mesh cloth,” inserted into the coochie like a tampon and left in for a recommended 24-72 hours which could potentially lead to toxic shock syndrome or pelvic inflammatory disease, according to Mount Sinai.

It’s very well time to move away from all the pussy-cleansing myths and onto healthier methods that remove impurities and give your reproductive system a little grace. AUNTIE identified 5 alternatives to ditch douching and detox your box the right way in 2024.

1) Soak That Thang

A good soak in the bathtub minus bubble bath or soapy agents is the way to go. Instead, pour one cup of  apple cider vinegar into your bath water to help balance your PH levels. Also, drink a cap full of apple cider vinegar to alkalize your body and by default, this will help alkalize your vagina.

2) Sitz Bath For That Ass

If you want to skip the tub and focus solely on your poom-poom, then a sitz bath might be more convenient. Baking soda, tea tree oil and frankincense is a good detox recipe for yeast infections and vaginal irritation. These ingredients act as both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents.

3) Feed It Garlic

Garlic has far more superpowers than flavoring food and tamping down colds. This multipurpose herb is also medically-proven to treat vaginal infections when used as a suppository. Though, dosage is recommended by a gynecologist to “prevent potential toxicity,” so maybe consult your doctor or a homeopathic physician.

4) Yogurt For That Yoni

Yogurt, detox

Plain old yogurt may be consumed orally or used topically or soaked up in a tampon or frozen into finger-sized popsicles and inserted into your cooch to beat back yeast and restore bacterial balance to your poom-poom—thanks to its good bacteria and probiotic properties.

5) Vaginal Vacay

Beach PEXEL

Proaction beats reaction on any day. Peen, semen, tongue, saliva, fingers and sex toys can throw off your pussy’s PH. Consider giving that box a break from all sexual activity and watch the body miraculously restore that coochie to its normal PH state.
