Adrienne Banfield-Norris took to Instagram to share a powerful testimony of sobriety with her followers. Affectionately known as “Gammy,” and the mother of Jada Pinkett-Smith, is no stranger to addiction, however, Dec. 22 marked 33 years since she used, according to the IG clip. Banfield-Norris captioned the post:

“Grateful to God and grateful for this journey. Clean not always serene. 33 years #myrecovery #onedayatatime 🙏🏾 ✨”

“I got a call from my sister congratulating me for 33 years of sobriety,” the 70-year-old said. “You know this time of year, on this day, this when I’m the most pensive, the most thoughtful.

Gammy continued, “not New Years Eve, not New Years Day, but the anniversary of my surrender. There are a lot of thoughts going on in my head, but what I really want to say is thank you.”

Banfield-Norris thanked God for help in making “one of the best decisions” of her life.

Banfield-Norris has been candid about her substance abuse. In a discussion on the now-defunct Red Table Talk, the former co-host shared that she was a heroin user for over 20 years before she stopped using. The grandmother of two said while she initially stopped using for a man, she eventually found the strength to do it for herself.

Pinkett-Smith writes about the discovery and adversity of her mother’s drug abuse in her recent memoir. You can find Worthy in most Black book stores and online retailers.
