Oprah Winfrey, a newly turned septuagenarian, stepped into her platinum year on the heels of the release of The Color Purple, at a lighter weight and with new knees. All hailed the queen of media on her 70th birthday which she celebrated Jan. 29 with a peaceful run along the oceanside. As Winfrey embarks on a new era in her life, her past remains nothing short of Black Women’s history.

The award-winning television host, who was a cultural influencer long before Instagram influence was a thing, has come a long way from her birthplace in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She has blazed the trails of media, philanthropy, and tastemaking to become the first Black female billionaire. Along this journey, Oprah has invited legions of Black women into the concepts of growth, healing, self-love and most notably gratitude.
