Gayle King’s appearance on The Pivot Podcast was not on many people’s bingo card but it’s certainly worth the watch.
The acclaimed journalist pulled up to the show in full auntie mode and had a grown ass, sophisticated conversation about cuss words, dating and dick.
Yep.
Oprah’s bestie was hella candid in her one-hour talk with Fred Taylor, Ryan Clark and Channing Crowder, and delighted the hosts—and likely viewers—with her down-to-earth presence and relatable takes on some pretty interesting topics.
King talked about growing up abroad, meeting Oprah, raising children after divorce, but the discussion pivoted to King’s dating experiences– and the difficulties of dating. King shared that one man she was really “excited” about asked her for a loan after two months of dating. King recalled the request saying the asked, “‘Do you think you can lend me $4000?’”
“‘Oprah said I would have felt better if he had said $40,000.” King said. “I was so crushed. He was somebody who was making six-figures, successful, and when I said, ‘Could I ask what it’s for?’ he said…it was for a child support issue and to pay a payment on some furniture.”
The guy repaid King but her feelings for furthering the relationship had deflated. The 69-year-old went on to share her preference in dating and the particular affinity she has for Black men’s machismo when it comes to cussing.
“I really am attracted to men of color, I just am,” King confirmed. “I love how a Black man says ‘motherfucker and baby,’ nobody says it like y’all.”
King’s comments prompted laughter among the hosts but also piqued their curiosity to know exactly what she meant.
“It’s just the way that is said,” King continued. “I don’t even know how to explain it to you … It can be a term of endearment or I’m really pissed, but there’s something about how a Black man says it. I’m attracted to that,”
“He gotta have something else too though.” She quickly followed up.
Here’s the rundown King looks for in a partner:
- Sense of humor
- Kindness
- Versatility
- Intelligence
- Grammar
At one point in the interview, Crowder said he has his “mother’s penis,” a reference he makes to having a small dick. King extended and embrace of empathy to the former football player for his troubles. It’s what aunties do. It was refreshing to see the lighter side of King, as her celebrity and professional persona doesn’t always make room for the down to earth version of herself that was shared. Gayle King is all of us.
