If keep my mama’s name out your mouth was a tweet, it’s the one Dr. Bernice A. King dropped Jan. 9.
It appears the CEO of the King Center has had enough of the shenanigans about her moms playing the role of a trophy woman who was relegated to being some man’s peace—that man being her dad, the good reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bernice, the youngest of Coretta Scott and Martin’s brood of four made this plain on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“My mother wasn’t a prop.” Dr. Bernice tweeted.
“She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War.
Please understand…my mama was a force.

The civil rights activists’ daughter wrapped her comment up by inviting people to learn exactly who Coretta was by her own account:
“Here’s what I wrote about her a few years ago: huffpost.com/entry/coretta-…”
Chances are Dr. Bernice’s motivation to chin check folks on misrepresenting her mother is fueled by eyebrow raising comments made by fallen actor Jonathan Majors, encouraging his former, Caucasian girlfriend Grace Jabbari to be a supportive Black woman like Coretta Scott King because he is “a great man.”
He says she “has to be of a certain mindset to support” him, like Coretta Scott King was to Martin Luther King Jr. and Michelle Obama to Barack Obama.”
The actor’s Coretta Scott comments resulted in a litany of jokes and criticism but instead of putting all that stand-by-yo-man rhetoric to rest, Majors resurfaced his Coretta Scott King sentiment in an interview with Good Morning America. The troubled star likened his now-girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, as angelic.
“She’s held me down like a Coretta” Major said while grinning. “I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh, but I think I’ve found her.”
Good has been tied to Majors since The Harder They Fall actor fell from Hollywood grace. Majors’ original musings around the strength of woman being emulated in Coretta were revealed at his recent trial as he defended himself against charges that he assaulted Jabbari after an altercation in a NYC cab. The Lovecraft Country actor was found guilty of assault and harassment, CNN reported.
In other news, Dr. Bernice A. King recently announced the slate of events for the commemoration of the 39th annual King Holiday observance. Much of the programming will take place in Atlanta, Georgia at The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change which was established by Coretta in 1968. Check resources below.
